New Year’s news

New Year's news from Fringe Supply Co.

Hey, happy new year! I had decided not to make any sort of blog or knitting resolutions this year, as it’s always depressing to go back and see where I fell short. But then I went and looked at last year’s new year’s day post, and this was the nut of it:

So my goal for this year is to choose wisely. I feel like I’ve gotten much better about picking projects and materials that are worthy of my precious making time. I want to make better, not more. And now that I have the space to do it, I want to really, truly sew. The biggest personal shift for me this year was the crystallization of a desire to know where my clothes come from, whether I’ve made them myself or bought them from small-batch producers. But most of all, I want to make them — to the extent that life will allow.

What do you know! That part I think I can feel pretty damn good about. Although, remember that whole fantasy about how this week was gonna go? How I’d work a few hours in the morning, sew all afternoon, and knit in the evening? Yeah, HAHAHAHA! I did sew a lovely muslin last Saturday, worked all day Sunday, then put in the usual 12-14 hour days all this week. My making has amount to 4 rows of Bob’s sweater. Oy! So this week has been a bit discouraging, but I’m proud of all I sewed and knitted this year, and how much of it has resulted in truly useful garments.

Anyway, no resolutions this year, but I do want to give you some news — a few different heads-ups. First: You guys really surprised me and endeared yourselves to me with your enthusiasm over the army green Field Bag. I thought I was ordering that one for me and DG and a few other weirdos, but it wound up running neck and neck with the gorgeous grey throughout the holiday season. Unfortunately, last week when I placed an order for more of the army green canvas, I was informed that it’s deadstock. My order that day cleaned them out. So we’re down to the last two batches of army green bags:

1. The penultimate batch is mid-progress — half of them are at Fringe Supply Co. right now for you to jump all over, and the other half of this batch will be listed at the beginning of next week.

2. The final batch will be sewn up (if all goes as planned) in time for me to take them to Stitches West in February! I wasn’t planning to do West this year, but Veronika Jobe at YOTH asked me to set up a Fringe pop-up in her killer booth, and I’ve said yes to that. So the last of the army green bags will be with me at that show. If any survive the weekend, I’ll put them in the webshop the following week.

So basically, if you are going to Stitches West, plan to hit me up first thing! If you’re not, do what you can to nab one from the webshop now.

And in addition to West, I also want to let you know DG and I will have the full-blown Fringe booth once again at Stitches South here in Nashville the first weekend of April. I’d love to see you at one or both shows!

Quick holiday knits — in a kit!

Quick holiday knits — in a kit!

The reception to my knit kits has been so heartening that I’ve wanted to create a kit for the Stadium Hat and Stadium Mitts duo, too, and today it’s finally here: The Stadium Hat & Mitts knit kit, available in 6 great colors of Imperial Yarn’s delicious wool-cotton marled Anna yarn, one of my all-time favorite yarns. Both the hat and mitts are fun, fast and satisfying knits — highly wearable and highly giveable!  Either the kit or the knits would make easy and appreciated gifts for the holidays.

Speaking of colors, I’m super pleased at the response to the Field Bag colors released last week along with the Holiday Lookbook. (You’ve seen the lookbook, yeah?) Grey and Army Green both sold out pretty quickly last weekend, but there will be more today. In fact, the sewers are making a small batch of these each week from now through Christmas, and given the demand versus the supply, I’m going to post them to the shop at NOON CENTRAL TIME on Fridays, starting today. So set your alarm!

We’ve also got Knit and Let Knit totes back in stock, some adorable new greeting cards, and lots more to love at Fringe Supply Co.

A couple of notes:

– From now through the end of the year, I’m offering FREE SHIPPING on domestic orders over $100. (International orders will continue to have their shipping billed separately based on order details. See the FAQ for more on that.)

– And don’t forget, we’re happy to handle gift orders. While we don’t gift wrap, per se, every order we ever ship is packaged in a way that’s worthy of giving. (We always want you to feel like you sent yourself a present.) If you include a note upon checkout (there’s a note-to-the-seller field) saying explicitly that it’s a gift, we’ll leave out the invoice and even include a card if you tell us what to say.

Happy shopping, and thanks again and always for your support!

Merry and bright: the Fringe Holiday Lookbook 2015

IT'S HERE! The Fringe Holiday Lookbook 2015

Sitting on these images the past two weeks has been harder than I can tell you, so it is with an extra dose of delight today that I’m announcing the Fringe Holiday Lookbook 2015! As you know, I don’t change things up much when it comes to the selection of goods at Fringe Supply Co. I only sell a small collection of things I personally use and love, including those I’ve designed myself, but there’s a lot to be excited about here — most notably the Field Bag in colors! Well, “colors” — not surprisingly they’re black, grey and army green. The natural version is my first and truest love, but these new guys are stunners. And they’re a bit of a test; I’m trying them out exclusively here at Fringe for the holidays, and they’ll be in stores early next year depending on which one(s) you all love most. There’s also a lot of black this season, which is making me swoony, including your Bookhou favorites (tote, storage box and pouch) in a drop-dead-gorgeous black on charcoal print, and my all-time-favorite jumbo tote bag in black for the first time. (You can bet the one from the shoot went home with me!) There’s a limited number of pretty much all of the above, so don’t hesitate. And I’ve also added some other small treasures to enhance your knitting life — lots of useful pretties in silver and brass.

My pal Kathy Cadigan and I had a blast shooting this one at some of our favorite haunts in Seattle’s Pioneer Square and at the Homestead Seattle Airbnb. I’m super grateful to Kathy and to everyone who helped make it happen, especially the Dianich family for the loan of the Christmas tree! And always, always, so thankful to all of you for supporting me and Fringe and the other small businesses Fringe represents.

Hop on over and VIEW THE FULL LOOKBOOK, and let me know what you think. Clicking anything you like in there will take you to the corresponding page in the webshop where you can pop it into your cart. Or go straight to the shop if you prefer to browse that way! Happy looking, and happy start of the holiday season! Have a great weekend—

Introducing the Stowe Bag — our first sewing pattern!

Fringe Supply Co. x Grainline Studio = Stowe Bag sewing pattern

Remember that bag I sewed in May and couldn’t tell you about? And then the ones that showed up in my Gallery Dress post, which I also couldn’t tell you about? Well, I can finally tell you: Today marks the debut of Fringe’s very first sewing pattern — the Stowe Bag, in collaboration with Grainline Studio! You can tell how excited I am about this by the number of photos I’m including here.

Some of you will remember the little project bag that Fringe Supply Co. first launched with in the winter of 2012. It was modeled after the ubiquitous plastic bag, with its fold-flat design and handy handles, but made in sturdy canvas and ticking and with lots of useful pockets. I had a small run of them made, but the design proved to be problematic for production, so that’s all there ever were. Still lamenting its demise, in the summer of 2014 I got in touch with the supremely talented Jen Beeman of Grainline and asked if she’d like to collaborate on a sewing pattern, and thankfully she said yes! Because we’re both so busy and wanted this to be a fun project rather than a stressful one, we’ve taken our time bringing it to you, but it’s finally here. While staying true to the original, Jen tweaked the construction to make it suitable for home sewers and also scaled it up for a larger version, both of which are included in the pattern. As much as I love the original size, I am crazy for the big bag and use my canvas one all the time — mainly for travel and for hauling a load of stuff to sewing classes and such, but I’m also making a pocketless linen one to be my errand-running bag.

We’ve labeled Stowe an advanced-beginner sewing pattern only because of the bias edging — if you’ve never worked with bias tape before, this is actually a great project with which to learn. And because I know some of you will ask: This is a sewing pattern only; the bag is not available as finished goods. (We have lots of great bag options in the shop!)

You can order the printed paper pattern today at Fringe Supply Co., and it’s also available at yarn and fabric stores all over — so look for it wherever you buy Grainline patterns. There’s also a digital download version available through Grainline Studio.

I can’t wait to see what you sew!

Super Saturday shop news

NEW at Fringe Supply Co!

Hi! Just a quick note this lovely Fall Saturday to let you know there are some new treasures in the webshop. The most exciting one, for me personally, is a brand-new color of Bento Bag: Caramel linen, which was created in conjunction with Ambatalia exclusively for us. I love love love it, and you can get it in all three sizes. But I’m also super excited about the new issue of KnitWit (note that we also have copies of the previous issue, if you missed that); a new gender-neutral scent of the beloved Etta+Billie skin balm, Chai Tea; and a funky new pair of brass and steel scissors. You can get those and more today at Fringe Supply Co.!

New here and there

New here and there

A little later this morning, the Brooklyn Tweed fall collection launches — always a fun moment — but this time around the collection also comes with a new yarn from them. So be ready to check that out later on. Also, announced yesterday is a book I’m extremely excited about. My pal Anna Dianich of Tolt Yarn and Wool asked me last spring if I’d be interested in contributing a pattern to a book she was planning, and I couldn’t be more honored to be part of it. It’s called “Farm to Needle: Stories of Wool,” and it tells the stories of five US yarn producers (with incredible photos by my other great pal Kathy Cadigan) along with patterns designed for the yarns from those farms, designed by Dianna Walla, Andrea Rangel, Veronika Jobe, Tif Fussell, Ashley Yousling and Annie Rowden, and me. Preorders start Friday and you can find out more on her Instagram feed.

MEANWHILE, there’s lots of great stuff at Fringe Supply Co. for you today. First of all, my very favorite wool soap is finally available at Fringe! (I’ve waited about two years for this, y’all.) The new Amirisu fall issue is here and it’s fantastic. The knitting patterns — two pullovers, two cardigans, a triangle shawl and two wraps — are so impeccable and wearable. (I also have some involvement in this one, with an essay about why I make my own clothes and about Slow Fashion October.) With the cooling temperatures here, we’ve finally put the beloved balms back up for sale! Both the Little Seed Farm balms for keeping your hands in great condition, and the Etta + Billie balm for immediately smoothing your fingertips when it’s time to pick up your knitting. Plus everyone’s favorite rulers are also back in stock, along with more repair hooks. So hop on over to Fringe Supply Co. and treat yourself!

With which to mend, carry, repair

With which to mend, carry, repair

Ever since I first posted pics of my embroidermended jeans last summer, I’ve gotten tons of questions about them. Especially that patch on the upper right thigh, which you can see in more detail here. I’m hoping to put together a complete tutorial as part of Slow Fashion October (yes, it’s happening!) but I’ve gone ahead and listed the beautiful sashiko thread I love in the webshop, since it’s really just running stitch and I know lots of you don’t need any guidance from me! Because I’m me, I bought black, white, ivory and every shade of blue! Along with lovely needles to go with. So you can get those today at Fringe Supply Co.

… along with MORE FIELD BAGS!! And the beloved repair hooks are also back in stock. Note that we’re now selling them as sets, except we still had some individual larges, in both bone and ebony, so those will continue to be available on their own for as long as they last. (There’s a large number of Field Bags over there this round so maybe they’ll hold out for more than an hour!)

Thanks for all the great comments this week. Have a wonderfully crafty weekend — I’m hoping to do something more than set up house, myself — and I’ll see you back here next week! The week that brings us SEPTEMBER! Ahhhhhh
