I think it works better in some instances than others. Top left is the nicest, IMO. The two on the right are the weirdest. I’m camera shy too so I get it but I think you don’t need to do this. :)
I guess I am only half-joking. I saw a funny thread in the Ravelry forums (which I still haven’t really ventured into yet) wherein a woman was bemoaning the fact that everyone was taking pictures of themselves looking down or away instead of into the camera. Of course most are going for a look rather than actually being camera shy, but that cracked me up. She was like “Look into the camera!” I’m trying to be better about it.
